As an owner operator truck driver keeping your trailer in good shape is vital for a smooth operation workflow.   Having a Trailer Maintenance Program in place has multiple benefits like guaranteeing on-time deliveries, extending the useful life of your equipment, and saving money on repairs.  Status Truck & Trailer Repair in Peach State conveniently located in Forest Park provides trailer maintenance services so you can keep your dry van, reefer or flatbed trailer in tip-top shape.

These are a trailer maintenance tips you can include on your trailer maintenance checklist and keep your equipment in safe driving condition.

Trailer Maintenance Tips – Braking System

Your trailer brake system will function correctly as long as it’s properly maintained and used correctly.  By using it correctly we mean not taking off before releasing the brakes on the trailer causing unnecessary wear and tear on the braking system.  Your trailer braking system should be tested periodically checking for out-of-adjustment brakes and stopping distances.  Check different brake components that tend to wear out like brake shoes, drums, and springs.  If any of these components shows signs of wear they should be replaced.  Also, as part of your pre-trip inspection make sure to check air system pressure.

Trailer Lighting and Electrical System

A careful inspection of your trailer’s electrical system will ensure there are no damaged wires and that everything is correctly supported and protected.  In case there are any damaged wires they should be replaced immediately with the same scale or larger gauge cable. All perforations for cable must be protected with rubber grommets.  Chemicals commonly used for de-icing can damage electrical connections and wires.  Rinse the equipment whenever possible after using these types of chemicals, especially the underside of the trailer.

Trailer Tire Inspection

Good tire condition is very important for a safe operation.  The Utility trailer maintenance manual suggests checking your tires as part of every pre-trip inspection. Carry out a visual inspection to determine if there are any damaged or worn tires. Avoid a blowout by replacing any tires that show significant wear or irregularities.

Inspect the tires tread depth which according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety administration regulations, should be at least 2/32 of an inch in major grooves.  Remember depth measurements cannot be taken from wear indicators.  Also, it is very important to check the air pressure in each tire during your pre-trip inspection.
